Examples include cytoskeletal filaments in gliding assays, magnetically driven colloidal helices, and microorganisms such as the bacterium $\\it{Myxococcus}$ $\\it{xanthus}$. Here, we develop a model for spinning self-propelled rods on a substrate, and we coarse grain it to derive the corresponding hydrodynamic equations. If the rods propel purely along their axis, they form an active nematic at high density and activity. However, spinning rods can also roll sideways as they move.","authors_text":"Debarghya Banerjee, Lauritz Hahn, Ricard Alert","cross_cats":["physics.bio-ph"],"headline":"","license":"http://arxiv.org/licenses/nonexclusive-distrib/1.0/","primary_cat":"cond-mat.soft","submitted_at":"2024-10-16T06:00:59Z","title":"Active screws: Emergent active chiral nematics of spinning self-propelled rods"},"references":{"count":0,"internal_anchors":0,"resolved_work":0,"sample":[],"snapshot_sha256":"258153158e38e3291e3d48162225fcdb2d5a3ed65a07baac614ab91432fd4f57"},"source":{"id":"2410.12263","kind":"arxiv","version":3},"verdict":{"created_at":null,"id":null,"model_set":{},"one_line_summary":"","pipeline_version":null,"pith_extraction_headline":"","strongest_claim":"","weakest_assumption":""}},"verdict_id":null}}],"author_attestations":[],"timestamp_anchors":[],"storage_attestations":[],"citation_signatures":[],"replication_records":[],"corrections":[],"mirror_hints":[],"record_created":{"event_id":"sha256:3c08d773c5b93a5c03b09ab1c191333a2730a990240825c84b7542b68741a1c3","target":"record","created_at":"2026-08-04T02:38:09Z","signer":{"key_id":"pith-v1-2026-05","public_key_fingerprint":"8d4b5ee74e4693bcd1df2446408b0d54","signer_id":"pith.science","signer_type":"pith_registry"},"payload":{"attestation_state":"computed","canonical_record":{"metadata":{"abstract_canon_sha256":"92948e741c9959cc57db388084114f8c822ff63032917a8149be12e0c422dbf2","cross_cats_sorted":["physics.bio-ph"],"license":"http://arxiv.org/licenses/nonexclusive-distrib/1.0/","primary_cat":"cond-mat.soft","submitted_at":"2024-10-16T06:00:59Z","title_canon_sha256":"d81db115de0f75da25d2e682bf9be5b204192775742d8c2ab0b3616e573812b3"},"schema_version":"1.0","source":{"id":"2410.12263","kind":"arxiv","version":3}},"canonical_sha256":"b22e19244782e85d15188768432b9f5bb8004831a36f87d5fe43d25a6c7406c7","receipt":{"algorithm":"ed25519","builder_version":"pith-number-builder-2026-05-17-v1","canonical_sha256":"b22e19244782e85d15188768432b9f5bb8004831a36f87d5fe43d25a6c7406c7","first_computed_at":"2026-08-04T02:38:09.837101Z","key_id":"pith-v1-2026-05","kind":"pith_receipt","last_reissued_at":"2026-08-04T02:38:09.837101Z","public_key_fingerprint":"8d4b5ee74e4693bcd1df2446408b0d54","receipt_version":"0.3","signature_b64":"pnaLdJ8nwqcfNos7j0t/zuRb3MvJrbxHF8WbaTSgCDRsvQJdDgre2A67nFJz1zjKr/qBW+ALRBjN/cCZrS5ODw==","signature_status":"signed_v1","signed_at":"2026-08-04T02:38:09.839570Z","signed_message":"canonical_sha256_bytes"},"source_id":"2410.12263","source_kind":"arxiv","source_version":3}}},"equivocations":[],"invalid_events":[],"applied_event_ids":["sha256:3c08d773c5b93a5c03b09ab1c191333a2730a990240825c84b7542b68741a1c3","sha256:86819330d613047b5acddd6b7c1fc58a8cb41dd0ffbfd2bdc746bf0861f63c67"],"state_sha256":"1bf8037ce16871c02e64fa359ce5f5865732d4e222620a7bc18b23e2830d9dbe"}
