The E. coli bacterium propels itself using a bundle of rotating helical flagella. If one flagellum reverses its rotational direction, it leaves the bundle, performs a polymorphic transformation, and the bacterium tumbles. The E. coli bacterium is hydrodynamically attracted to surfaces. This prolongs its residence time, while tumbling facilitates surface detachment. We develop a model of E. coli that uses an extended Kirchhoff rod theory to implement flagellar flexibility as well as different polymorphic conformations ","authors_text":"Holger Stark, Pierre Martin, Tapan Chandra Adhyapak","cross_cats":["physics.bio-ph"],"headline":"","license":"http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/","primary_cat":"cond-mat.soft","submitted_at":"2025-04-29T16:09:10Z","title":"E. coli bacterium tumbling in bulk and close to surfaces: A simulation study"},"references":{"count":0,"internal_anchors":0,"resolved_work":0,"sample":[],"snapshot_sha256":"258153158e38e3291e3d48162225fcdb2d5a3ed65a07baac614ab91432fd4f57"},"source":{"id":"2504.20893","kind":"arxiv","version":1},"verdict":{"created_at":null,"id":null,"model_set":{},"one_line_summary":"","pipeline_version":null,"pith_extraction_headline":"","strongest_claim":"","weakest_assumption":""}},"verdict_id":null}}],"author_attestations":[],"timestamp_anchors":[],"storage_attestations":[],"citation_signatures":[],"replication_records":[],"corrections":[],"mirror_hints":[],"record_created":{"event_id":"sha256:1f2206ebec1e3d41506741eea5dc521ef91ac6094be6e709ac4b56b2f1311a23","target":"record","created_at":"2026-07-05T10:55:50Z","signer":{"key_id":"pith-v1-2026-05","public_key_fingerprint":"8d4b5ee74e4693bcd1df2446408b0d54","signer_id":"pith.science","signer_type":"pith_registry"},"payload":{"attestation_state":"computed","canonical_record":{"metadata":{"abstract_canon_sha256":"38f24cb3f10af90aa06e18aa5756e656eac18b6ffb24645adfc08a158bc21a42","cross_cats_sorted":["physics.bio-ph"],"license":"http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/","primary_cat":"cond-mat.soft","submitted_at":"2025-04-29T16:09:10Z","title_canon_sha256":"920f300ccfa297e47f046ac1147da8785ee252c34866d044b85dc6e77484237f"},"schema_version":"1.0","source":{"id":"2504.20893","kind":"arxiv","version":1}},"canonical_sha256":"b2e5ef58ada4a3c3286f10abd0c7fafe95a17b082bc4d2588dbdf1768eea9d0c","receipt":{"algorithm":"ed25519","builder_version":"pith-number-builder-2026-05-17-v1","canonical_sha256":"b2e5ef58ada4a3c3286f10abd0c7fafe95a17b082bc4d2588dbdf1768eea9d0c","first_computed_at":"2026-07-05T10:55:50.536210Z","key_id":"pith-v1-2026-05","kind":"pith_receipt","last_reissued_at":"2026-07-05T10:55:50.536210Z","public_key_fingerprint":"8d4b5ee74e4693bcd1df2446408b0d54","receipt_version":"0.3","signature_b64":"hMJyAKnco0xJe4/GG4EVjblWNgV5+O0j165/POXFwqAxUW0kRhkLsGzaZvfOtirQf8KnOg3RzNk5wstNkM75BA==","signature_status":"signed_v1","signed_at":"2026-07-05T10:55:50.536758Z","signed_message":"canonical_sha256_bytes"},"source_id":"2504.20893","source_kind":"arxiv","source_version":1}}},"equivocations":[],"invalid_events":[],"applied_event_ids":["sha256:1f2206ebec1e3d41506741eea5dc521ef91ac6094be6e709ac4b56b2f1311a23","sha256:5db5ddedda32704e1e1cbcec6f293a7e8511a1d8214d9376f7b34e59e83bcd43"],"state_sha256":"fbd5f4c89fce8961c03919ea5a3904116db2c99d100669b53b6ae327bce81a85"}
