Within the replica nonlinear $\\sigma$-model (NL$\\sigma$M) formalism, they arise from nonperturbative soliton saddle points of the NL$\\sigma$M action. The problem is reduced to evaluating the partition function of a replicated classical one dimensional Coulomb gas.
