In addition to the gravitational calculations, GRAPE simultaneously constructs the lists of neighbor particles that are necessary for Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH). However, data transfer of the neighbor lists from GRAPE to the host computer is time consuming, and can be a bottleneck.
