abstract

The ten dimensional string theories as well as eleven dimensional supergravity are conjectured to arise as limits of a more basic theory, traditionaly dubbed M--theory. This notion is confined to the ten dimensional supersymmetric theories. String theory, however, also contains ten dimensional nonsupersymmetric theories that have not been incorporated into this picture. In this note we explore the possibility of generating the low energy spectra of various nonsupersymmetric heterotic string vacua form the Horava--Witten model. We argue that this can be achieved by imposing on the Horava--Witten model an invariance with respect to some extra operators which identify the orbifold fixed planes in a nontrivial way, and demonstrate it for the E_8 and SO(16)XSO(16) heterotic string vacua in ten dimensions.

Non-supersymmetric dualities beyond the gauge algebra

hep-th · 2026-06-29 · conditional · novelty 6.0

Global gauge groups match in the Blum–Dienes duality, but the Bergman–Gaberdiel duality needs an unexplained extra Z2 projection on type 0B orientifold branes.

Heterotic Ouroboros

hep-th · 2026-04-24 · conditional · novelty 6.0 · 2 refs

The seven non-supersymmetric heterotic strings are re-derived from M-theory on S^1∨S^1 via an 'ouroboros' type I' configuration whose rules are fitted to reproduce the known spectra; new junctions among the theories are proposed.

A Duality Web for Non-Supersymmetric Strings

hep-th · 2026-04-08 · unverdicted · novelty 6.0

A duality web is proposed in which Z2 quotients of M-theory on S1 vee S1 and F-theory on (S1 vee S1) x S1 map to 0A/0B orientifolds and non-supersymmetric E-type and D-type heterotic strings, providing evidence for existing dualities.
