abstract

A study is made of the implications of heterotic string $T$-duality and extended gauge symmetry for the conjectured equivalence of heterotic and Type I superstrings. While at first sight heterotic string world-sheet dynamics appears to conflict with Type I perturbation theory, a closer look shows that Type I perturbation theory ``miraculously'' breaks down, in some cases via novel mechanisms, whenever the heterotic string has massless particles not present in Type I perturbation theory. This strongly suggests that the two theories actually are equivalent. As further evidence in the same direction, we show that the Dirichlet one-brane of type I string theory has the same world-sheet structure as the heterotic string.

The Art of Networking: Networks of Trivalent 10d Heterotic Junctions

hep-th · 2026-07-01 · unverdicted · novelty 7.0

The paper constructs arbitrary networks of 10d non-tachyonic heterotic string theories via cobordism-implied junctions and gives worldsheet realizations for graphs, higher-dimensional networks, and compact configurations with sectors on different spaces.

The Art of Branching: Cobordism Junctions of 10d String Theories

hep-th · 2026-03-25 · conditional · novelty 7.0

Explicit worldsheet constructions of 9d junctions joining several 10d string theories via generalized RG flow interpolations and closed tachyon condensation, providing dynamical realizations of multi-theory cobordisms.

Alice in Warpland: KK modes, Warped Compactifications and the Swampland

hep-th · 2026-03-11 · unverdicted · novelty 7.0

In codimension-one warped compactifications with exponential potentials, the KK mass decay rate λ_KK is reduced by warping but still satisfies the Sharpened Distance Conjecture precisely when the higher-dimensional potential obeys the Strong de Sitter condition.

Non-supersymmetric dualities beyond the gauge algebra

hep-th · 2026-06-29 · conditional · novelty 6.0

Global gauge groups match in the Blum–Dienes duality, but the Bergman–Gaberdiel duality needs an unexplained extra Z2 projection on type 0B orientifold branes.

Heterotic Ouroboros

hep-th · 2026-04-24 · conditional · novelty 6.0 · 2 refs

The seven non-supersymmetric heterotic strings are re-derived from M-theory on S^1∨S^1 via an 'ouroboros' type I' configuration whose rules are fitted to reproduce the known spectra; new junctions among the theories are proposed.

A Duality Web for Non-Supersymmetric Strings

hep-th · 2026-04-08 · unverdicted · novelty 6.0

A duality web is proposed in which Z2 quotients of M-theory on S1 vee S1 and F-theory on (S1 vee S1) x S1 map to 0A/0B orientifolds and non-supersymmetric E-type and D-type heterotic strings, providing evidence for existing dualities.
