The strongly anisotropic g factors of Yb3+ in NaYbS2 and NaYbO2 are controlled mainly by the charge contrast between in-plane Yb3+ neighbors and inter-layer Na+ ions, with a more homogeneous cation environment yielding nearly isotropic g factors.
