Using TNG100, star-forming galaxies are shown to form stars in two-branch episodic cycles, whose internal SFR fluctuations (~0.2 dex) plus galaxy-to-galaxy variance (~0.15 dex) match the observed ~0.25 dex main-sequence scatter.
