Proper latent decomposition (PLD) is introduced as a nonlinear analogue of proper orthogonal decomposition: it computes principal geodesics on the autoencoder-inferred manifold of a fluid flow, demonstrated on a laminar wake and turbulent Kolmogorov flow.
