ARPES and DFT show that at x=1/3 in Fe_x NbS2, Fe 3d_z2 bands lose coherence above the critical doping, collapsing Fe-Nb hybridization and suppressing out-of-plane Fe-Fe exchange to drive the stripe-to-zigzag antiferromagnetic transition.
