The genesis of the Max Planck Institute for Gravitational Physics (Albert Einstein Institute) after German re-unification as described here, shows that the history of the founding of the institute is not as simplistic as claimed e.g., in the presentation by the institute.Quite a few people and institutions have been involved.The institute now seems to be one of the largest institution for research in gravity, worldwide.
