I derive the third order optics of quadrupoles. I transform away the derivatives of the strength function, and thus demonstrate that third order aberrations are insensitive to fringe field shaping. The results can be used for efficient tracking to third order or for simple and quick evaluation of nonlinear effects.

Electrostatic toroidal bender and its fringe fields
A new COSY-Infinity code, GES, for electrostatic toroidal bends with fringe fields agrees with GIOS and with the author's hard-edge theory, and shows that COSY's ESP routine misses a curvature-derivative fringe-field term.

Analytic descriptions of soft-edge quadrupoles for beamline design in multi-particle simulations
New closed-form Maxwellian field formulas for soft-edge (tanh-shaped) quadrupoles with independent effective length L, implemented and demonstrated in TRANSOPTR, GEANT4, and FLUKA for the DarkLight beamline at TRIUMF.
