Systematic photometric and asteroseismological studies in the last decade support the belief that white dwarfs in the solar neighborhood harbor a broad range of hydrogen-layer contents. The reasons behind this spread of hydrogen-layer masses are not understood and usually misunderstood. In this work we present, and review, the different mechanisms that can (or cannot) lead to the formation of white dwarfs with a broad range hydrogen contents.

  1. Constraints from parallaxes and average period spacings in the asteroseismic study of 8 DAVs

    astro-ph.SR 2026-07 conditional novelty 5.0 of 10

Asymptotic period spacings plus Gaia parallaxes favor thick hydrogen layers in most of eight DAVs and give an upper limit M_env ≲ 10^{-2.2} for the helium-layer base.

  2. Early Post Asymptotic Giant Branch Instability: Does it Affect White Dwarf Hydrogen Envelope Mass?

    astro-ph.SR 2025-05 conditional novelty 5.0 of 10

The early post-AGB instability produces HRD loops and photospheric 7Be enhancement but does not significantly alter the final white dwarf hydrogen envelope mass.

  3. A primer on the formation and evolution of hydrogen deficient Central Stars of Planetary Nebul{\ae} and Related Objects

    astro-ph.SR 2024-11 unverdicted

A review of the formation and evolution of hydrogen-deficient central stars of planetary nebulae, comparing late thermal pulse (born again) and binary merger channels.
