Fast radio bursts (FRBs), millisecond-duration bursts prevailing in the radio sky, are the latest big puzzle in the universe and have been a subject of intense observational and theoretical investigations in recent years. The rapid accumulation of the observational data has painted the following sketch about the physical origin of FRBs: They predominantly originate from cosmological distances so that their sources produce the most extreme coherent radio emission in the universe; at least some, probably most, FRBs are repeating sources that do not invoke cataclysmic events; and at least some FRBs are produced by magnetars, neutron stars with the strongest magnetic fields in the universe. Many open questions regarding the physical origin(s) and mechanism(s) of FRBs remain. This article reviews the phenomenology and possible underlying physics of FRBs. Topics include: a summary of the observational data, basic plasma physics, general constraints on FRB models from the data, radiation mechanisms, source and environment models, propagation effects, as well as FRBs as cosmological probes. Current pressing problems and future prospects are also discussed.

Depolarization Induced by Rapid Polarization Angle Swings: A Common Feature of Pulsars and Fast Radio Bursts?
Rapid polarization-angle swings should depolarize pulsar and FRB emission, yielding an anti-correlation Π_L vs dPA/dt that has tentative support in a subset of pulsars.

Fast Inference on Astronomical Time Series with Trans-Dimensional Flow Matching Posterior Estimation
t-FMPE uses transformer-based flow matching to infer the number and parameters of pulses in astronomical light curves, producing posteriors comparable to MCMC but orders of magnitude faster.

Fast Radio Bursts Trace Cosmic Star Formation with Little Delay
Hierarchical Bayesian analysis of CHIME/FRB finds the FRB volumetric rate peaks with the cosmic star-formation history at mean delays of 0.1–0.3 Gyr, consistent with zero delay and ruling out multi-Gyr merger-like delays.

Unified kinetic theory of induced scattering: Compton, Brillouin, and Raman processes in magnetized electron and positron pair plasma
In strongly magnetized pair plasma, induced Compton and Brillouin scattering dominate in ordinary/neutral modes, while stimulated Raman scattering is enabled in a charged mode with growth rate (t_R)^-1 = a_e (omega0/o...

Multi-year Polarimetric Monitoring of Four CHIME-Discovered Repeating Fast Radio Bursts with FAST
Multi-year FAST polarimetry of four repeating FRBs reveals strong RM variability in 64% of known repeaters and a shallow turbulence spectrum in the surrounding plasma.

H.E.S.S. programme searching for VHE gamma rays associated with FRBs
H.E.S.S. found no very high energy gamma-ray counterpart to targeted fast radio bursts, setting 99% confidence upper limits on their luminosity of 10^44 to 10^48 erg/s.

Constraining the Baryon Fraction in Extragalactic Diffuse Ionized Gas with 124 Localized Fast Radio Bursts
Analyzing 92 localized FRBs with a Jacobian-corrected IGM dispersion PDF plus CMB, BAO, and supernova data gives f_IGM = 0.864 ± 0.041 (YMW16, ΛCDM); the abstract's '124 bursts, f_d > 90%' headline is not supported by...

Cosmological Constraints on the DGP Model in light of DESI DR2 2025 Data
DESI DR2 combined with CC, SNIa and CMB priors give H0≈63–64 km s−1 Mpc−1 for flat/non-flat DGP and ΔAIC>100 against ΛCDM, strongly disfavoring the model.
