I give a review of existing frameworks, which are designed to analyse lattice data in the three-particle sector. A particular emphasis is laid on the foundations of the theory, where the separation of the short- and long-range effects plays a central role. It is shown that the use of the effective field theory approach enables one to carry out this separation in a natural and efficient way. In conclusion, a few examples of the analysis of lattice data are considered for illustration.

For coupled-channel systems, the trapped integrated correlation function difference converges to a weighted integral over the sum of the two channel phase shifts, independent of inelasticity.
