Let $T$ be any invertible, ergodic, aperiodic measure-preserving transformation of a Lebesgue probability space $(X, \calB, \mu)$, and \P\, any finite measurable partition of $X$. We show that a (finite) Alpern multitower may always be constructed whose base is independent of \P.
