Inferences about the spatial density or phase-space structure of stellar populations in the Milky Way require a precise determination of the effective survey volume. The volume observed by surveys such as Gaia or near-infrared spectroscopic surveys, which have good coverage of the Galactic mid-plane region, is highly complex because of the abundant small-scale structure in the three-dimensional interstellar dust extinction. We introduce a novel framework for analyzing the importance of small-scale structure in the extinction. This formalism demonstrates that the spatially-complex effect of extinction on the selection function of a pencil-beam or contiguous sky survey is equivalent to a low-pass filtering of the extinction-affected selection function with the smooth density field. We find that the angular resolution of current 3D extinction maps is sufficient for analyzing Gaia sub-samples of millions of stars. However, the current distance resolution is inadequate and needs to be improved by an order of magnitude, especially in the inner Galaxy. We also present a practical and efficient method for properly taking the effect of extinction into account in analyses of Galactic structure through an effective selection function. We illustrate its use with the selection function of red-clump stars in APOGEE using and comparing a variety of current 3D extinction maps.

  1. The 35-Myr old infant planet TOI-837 b has a mildly misaligned orbit

    astro-ph.EP 2026-06 unverdicted novelty 8.0 of 10

TOI-837 b has a true obliquity of 25.9+7.5-6.3 deg, the first planet younger than 100 Myr with accessible ψ incompatible with an aligned orbit, favoring primordial disc torque followed by disc-driven migration.

  2. A survey of ultra-compact high-state AM CVn binaries with ZTF and Gaia: New discoveries and observational constraints on Galactic space density

    astro-ph.SR 2026-08 conditional novelty 7.0 of 10

Three new high-state AM CVn binaries are discovered, giving a local space density of about 1 to 3 per 10^8 cubic parsecs and LISA detection estimates near 36% of the Galactic population.

  3. Cataclysmic variables from Gaia XP spectra: The Gaia emission-line magnitude (GEM) diagram

    astro-ph.SR 2026-07 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

A Gaia-based emission-line magnitude diagram separates cataclysmic variables from white dwarfs, hot subdwarfs and WD+MS binaries, recovering known CVs and yielding three new candidates within 250 pc.

  4. The GAPS programme at TNG: LXXVI. TOI-1533: a compact system hosting a super-Neptune-mass pair with disparate radii

    astro-ph.EP 2026-06 unverdicted novelty 6.0 of 10

TOI-1533 is confirmed as a rare compact system hosting an inner sub-Neptune and an outer hot super-Neptune-mass giant with nearly equal masses and very different radii.

  5. Diagnosing Systematic Effects Using the Inferred Initial Power Spectrum

    astro-ph.CO 2024-12 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

The inferred initial matter power spectrum from the SELFI algorithm reveals misspecified galaxy bias, selection, mask, redshift, and gravity models, exposing a >2σ cosmological bias before parameter inference.

  6. Classification of IGR J20084+3221 as an Intermediate Polar using X-ray and Optical Observations

    astro-ph.HE 2026-05 accept novelty 4.0 of 10

IGR J20084+3221 is classified as an Intermediate Polar with a 635-second white dwarf spin period and a fitted mass of 1.09 solar masses.
