The recent association of several short gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) with early type galaxies with low star formation rate demonstrates that short bursts arise from a different progenitor mechanism than long bursts. However, since the duration distributions of the two classes overlap, membership is not always easily established. The picture is complicated by the occasional presence of softer, extended emission lasting tens of seconds after the initial spike-like emission. We show that the fundamental defining characteristic of the short burst class is that the initial spike exhibits negligible spectral evolution at energies above ~ 25 keV. This behavior is nearly ubiquitous for the 260 bursts with T90 < 2 s, where the BATSE TTE data completely included the initial spike. The same signature obtains for one HETE-2 and six Swift/BAT short bursts. Analysis of a small sample of "short" BATSE bursts with the most intense extended emission shows that the same lack of evolution on the pulse timescale obtains for the extended emission. The dynamic range in the ratio of peak intensities, spike : extended, is ~ 10^4. For some bursts, the extended emission is only a factor of 2-5 less intense. A high Lorentz factor, ~ 500-1000, might explain the negligible lags observed in short bursts.

  1. A set of distinctive properties ruling the prompt emission of GRB 230307A and other long {\gamma}-ray bursts from compact object mergers

    astro-ph.HE 2025-09 conditional novelty 6.5 of 10

GRB 230307A and several other long merger-candidate bursts show exponential evolution of pulse intensity, waiting time, duration, and spectral peak energy, contrasting with supernova-associated long bursts.

  2. Prospect for Detection of Strongly Lensed Multi-messenger Signals of Binary Neutron Star Mergers

    astro-ph.HE 2026-07 conditional novelty 5.0 of 10

Future CE+ET detectors may detect lensed BNS kilonovae at ~0.5/yr via pointed follow-up of known galaxy lenses, while lensed sGRBs and afterglows remain rare or undetectable with current-generation facilities.

  3. On the Duration of Gamma-Ray Bursts

    astro-ph.HE 2024-12 conditional novelty 4.0 of 10

GRB duration is shaped by the progenitor, the central engine, the emitter, and geometry, so short versus long duration is not a reliable direct indicator of what exploded or merged.

  4. A possible high-redshift origin for the short GRB 061201: implications of a compact binary merger beyond cosmic noon

    astro-ph.HE 2026-07 unverdicted novelty 3.0 of 10

The paper proposes a high-redshift (z>2) origin for GRB 061201 by combining afterglow constraints with deep JWST near-infrared imaging of a faint candidate host.
