I try to clarify several confusions in the popular literature concerning chaos, determinism, the arrow of time, entropy and the role of probability in physics. Classical ideas going back to Laplace and Boltzmann are explained and defended while some recent views on irreversibility, due to Prigogine, are criticized.

Provable quantum thermalization without statistical averages
A geometric result links quantum thermalization in almost all accessible pure states to saturation of controllably nonlocal out-of-time-ordered correlators, avoiding statistical averages entirely.

Aperiodicity is sufficient for macroscopic thermalization
A finite-time measurement of the return probability of an initial-state subspace is shown to be sufficient to certify macroscopic quantum thermalization at almost all times.
