Chiral gravitational waves from multi-phase magnetogenesis

Gianmassimo Tasinato, H. V. Ragavendra, L. Sriramkumar

Brief non-slow-roll phases during inflation, combined with parity-violating interactions, amplify chiral primordial magnetic fields and induce a stochastic gravitational-wave background containing both intensity and circular polarization.

Claims

C1strongest claim

We demonstrate, for the first time in a non-slow-roll framework, that chirality can significantly boost magnetic-field amplitudes and imprint distinctive polarization-dependent spectral features. We then develop a systematic formalism to evaluate the stochastic gravitational-wave background naturally induced at second order by these amplified fields, identifying both an intensity component and a circularly polarized contribution.

C2weakest assumption

The brief non-slow-roll phases remain theoretically consistent (no strong coupling or backreaction) while still producing the claimed amplification of chiral magnetic fields at small scales; the parity-violating interactions are assumed to be compatible with the inflationary background without introducing new instabilities.

C3one line summary

Multi-phase inflation with chiral vector interactions generates amplified primordial magnetic fields that induce a detectable circularly polarized gravitational-wave background.
