Claims

C1strongest claim

Using new optical integral field spectroscopic observations from the SDSS-V Local Volume Mapper, we confirm the characterization of the GCL as a foreground photoionized HII region, not associated with the Galactic center. ... we directly constrain the distance to the GCL to ~2 kpc.

C2weakest assumption

That the comparison of Balmer decrement reddening with 3D dust maps provides an accurate distance constraint, and that the [SIII]9532 emission fully traces the morphology without significant biases from extinction or incomplete coverage.

C3one line summary

The Galactic Center Lobe is a foreground HII region at ~2 kpc, photoionized and forming a closed outer loop, not a Galactic center feature.
