We reveal a previously unknown continuous symmetry and conservation law in the equations of linear isotropic elasticity, which describe the chirality of elastic waves. The integral chirality is determined by the population imbalance between right- and left-handed transverse phonons.
The derivation assumes the standard linear isotropic elasticity equations are complete and that the chirality density can be unambiguously defined from the displacement field without additional constraints from boundaries or nonlinearity.
