Magnetomechanical response of bilayered magnetic elastomers

Andreas M. Menzel, Elshad Allahyarov, Hartmut L\"owen, Lei Zhu

Claims

C1strongest claim

Under appropriate conditions, the bilayered magnetic elastomer can show a strongly amplified deformational response in comparison to a single-component material. Furthermore, a qualitatively opposite response can be obtained, i.e. a contraction along the magnetic field direction (as opposed to an elongation in the single-component case).

C2weakest assumption

The two layers remain perfectly bonded and their individual magnetoelastic responses can be linearly superposed without interfacial slippage or nonlinear particle rearrangements.

C3one line summary

Bilayered magnetic elastomers can exhibit strongly amplified deformation or field-induced contraction along the field, unlike the elongation seen in single-component materials.
