abstract

We review the recent developments in our understanding of non-BPS states and branes in string theory. The topics include 1) construction of unstable non-BPS D-branes in type IIA and type IIB string theories, 2) construction of stable non-BPS D-branes on various orbifolds and orientifolds of type II string theories, 3) description of BPS and non-BPS D-branes as tachyonic soliton solutions on brane-antibrane pair of higher dimension, and 4) study of the spectrum of non-BPS states and branes on a system of coincident D-brane - orientifold plane system. Some other related results are also discussed briefly.

The Art of Networking: Networks of Trivalent 10d Heterotic Junctions

hep-th · 2026-07-01 · unverdicted · novelty 7.0

The paper constructs arbitrary networks of 10d non-tachyonic heterotic string theories via cobordism-implied junctions and gives worldsheet realizations for graphs, higher-dimensional networks, and compact configurations with sectors on different spaces.

Non-supersymmetric dualities beyond the gauge algebra

hep-th · 2026-06-29 · conditional · novelty 6.0

Global gauge groups match in the Blum–Dienes duality, but the Bergman–Gaberdiel duality needs an unexplained extra Z2 projection on type 0B orientifold branes.

Heterotic Ouroboros

hep-th · 2026-04-24 · conditional · novelty 6.0 · 2 refs

The seven non-supersymmetric heterotic strings are re-derived from M-theory on S^1∨S^1 via an 'ouroboros' type I' configuration whose rules are fitted to reproduce the known spectra; new junctions among the theories are proposed.

  • Instanton-Induced Closed-String Amplitudes in Minimal Superstring Theory at Subleading Order hep-th · 2026-06-04 · unverdicted · none · ref 63 · internal anchor

Explicit computation of instanton-induced amplitudes in minimal superstring theories at subleading order, after regulating open-string degenerations with string field theory, yields exact agreement with DDK-KPZ scaling.

  • Fire at the Tip of the Throat: Hagedorn Phase after brane-antibrane inflation? hep-th · 2026-06-07 · unverdicted · none · ref 5 · internal anchor

In perturbatively moduli-stabilized brane-antibrane inflation, a modest fraction of annihilation energy into visible open strings can trigger a Hagedorn phase that suppresses ΔN_eff when the SM throat string scale is comparable or lower.

  • Thermodynamics vs Teleodynamics: A Cosmological Divide? gr-qc · 2025-12-04 · unverdicted · none · ref 25 · internal anchor

Stationary black holes obey ordinary thermodynamics but cosmology requires memory-bearing teleodynamics, with horizon memory causing deviations from the area law.
