abstract

T-Duality on a timelike circle does not interchange IIA and IIB string theories, but takes the IIA theory to a type $IIB^*$ theory and the IIB theory to a type $IIA^*$ theory. The type $II^*$ theories admit E-branes, which are the images of the type II D-branes under timelike T-duality and correspond to imposing Dirichlet boundary conditions in time as well as some of the spatial directions. The effective action describing an E$n$-brane is the $n$-dimensional Euclidean super-Yang-Mills theory obtained by dimensionally reducing 9+1 dimensional super-Yang-Mills on $9-n$ spatial dimensions and one time dimension. The $IIB^*$ theory has a solution which is the product of 5-dimensional de Sitter space and a 5-hyperboloid, and the E4-brane corresponds to anon-singular complete solution which interpolates between this solution and flat space. This leads to a duality between the large $N$ limit of the Euclidean 4-dimensional U(N) super-Yang-Mills theory and the $IIB^*$ string theory in de Sitter space, and both are invariant under the same de Sitter supergroup. This theory can be twisted to obtain a large $N$ topological gauge theory and its topological string theory dual. Flat space-time may be an unstable vacuum for the type $II^*$ theories, but they have supersymmetric cosmological solutions.

A Twisted Origin for Magnetic Carroll Supersymmetry

hep-th · 2026-03-30 · unverdicted · novelty 7.0

Magnetic Carroll supersymmetry descends from a twisted relativistic parent rather than naive contraction, realized in 3D N=2 with vector multiplet action whose conformal extension matches global super-BMS4.

BMS$_3$ invariant field theories

hep-th · 2026-07-07 · accept · novelty 6.0

New BMS3-invariant 2D scalar theories (electric, magnetic, canonical, coupled) with boundary analysis, flux laws, monodromy matching to 3D gravity, and complementary AdS3/dS3 flat limits.

No boundary density matrix in elliptic de Sitter dS/$\mathbb{Z}_2$

hep-th · 2025-11-30 · unverdicted · novelty 6.0

The Euclidean path integral on elliptic de Sitter defines a no-boundary density matrix whose entropies reduce to vertex operator correlators on non-orientable surfaces, with a one-dimensional global Hilbert space but nontrivial observer Fock spaces.

Worldsheet Formalism for Decoupling Limits in String Theory

hep-th · 2023-11-17 · unverdicted · novelty 6.0

Develops worldsheet sigma model for fundamental strings in critical type IIA limit showing nodal singularities and derives T-duality web unifying decoupling limits including ambitwistor and Carrollian strings.

Dark energy from string theory: an introductory review

hep-th · 2026-03-26 · unverdicted · novelty 2.0

String theory imposes constraints on dark energy but permits various construction attempts for de Sitter vacua and single-field exponential quintessence models despite obstructions.
