Long-range couplings reorganize the critical-length scaling of coupled non-Hermitian chains from logarithmic to algebraic and then to aspect-ratio-controlled scale-covariant laws.
They are introduced here so that the projected matrix elements in Appendices B–D can be traced back to a definite microscopic coupling rather than treated as abstract parameters
