The construction of black hole spacetimes that are regular (singularity-free) is plagued by the "mass inflation" instability, a classical perturbation instability induced by the surface gravity at the inner horizon and characterized by exponentially diverging stress-energy there. Recently, a class of "inner-extremal" regular black holes was proposed that possesses a vanishing inner-horizon surface gravity and therefore avoids mass inflation, while still maintaining a horizon separation and a non-zero outer-horizon surface gravity. However, when semiclassical effects are taken into account, it is found that an inner-horizon instability remains for generic inner-extremal regular black holes formed from collapse. This semiclassical divergence is analyzed from the perspective of both the effective Hawking temperature and the renormalized stress-energy tensor, and its origin and genericity are examined in detail.

  1. Semiclassical regularity of compact trapped regions: From dynamical horizons to inner extremality

    gr-qc 2026-07 conditional novelty 7.0 of 10

In finite-lifetime dynamical geometries the in-vacuum RSET stays finite at the inner horizon, growing exponentially for non-extremal cases but only as a power law for inner-extremal ones.

  2. Excising Cauchy Horizons with Nonlinear Electrodynamics

    gr-qc 2025-06 conditional novelty 7.0 of 10

For nonlinear electrodynamics with finite point-charge self-energy and strong energy condition, weakly charged black holes have Schwarzschild-like causal structure with no Cauchy horizon.

  3. Semiclassical Black Hole-White Hole transitions: an analytical treatment

    gr-qc 2026-08 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

The |in>-vacuum stress-energy in 2D collapse models amplifies at the inner horizon and can flip the ingoing null expansion, turning a trapped region into an anti-trapped one.

  4. Inner horizon instability via the trace anomaly effective action

    gr-qc 2024-11 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

The anomaly-induced effective action can reproduce the Hartle-Hawking stress-energy divergence at the Cauchy horizon of Reissner-Nordström, but lacks enough freedom to describe the Unruh state.

  5. Physical and Theoretical Challenges to Integrable Singularities

    gr-qc 2025-04 conditional novelty 5.0 of 10

Generic scalar perturbations near integrable singularities have non-integrable energy density, and extended objects cannot traverse them safely, challenging their viability as black hole alternatives.

  6. Analytic models for gravitational collapse

    gr-qc 2024-11 reject novelty 4.0 of 10

Two time-dependent mass profiles are proposed as exact models of the last stage of Schwarzschild collapse; one develops the curvature singularity immediately, the other only at infinite time, though the second model's...

  7. The Case For Black Hole Remnants: A Review

    gr-qc 2024-11 unverdicted novelty 2.0 of 10

A review arguing that black hole remnants remain viable and that the species and entropy objections to them are not decisive, so remnants could resolve the information paradox.

  8. Towards a Non-singular Paradigm of Black Hole Physics

    gr-qc 2025-01 unverdicted novelty 1.0 of 10

This is a review built around a week-long workshop, synthesizing the state and open problems of regular black holes and black hole mimickers as alternatives to singular black holes.
