We study the minimal requirements to obtain axion strings for axions with exponentially good quality. These ingredients appear in theories where an axion coming from a higher-form gauge field mixes with the phase of a complex scalar field in a situation that resembles higher-groups. The resulting axion is perturbatively massless and inherits a high-quality shift symmetry from the global higher-form symmetry while being compatible with a post-inflationary axion scenario. Due to differences and resemblances with both, extra-dimensional and field theory axions, we call this field the higher axion. To this end, we study a toy model on a 5-dimensional manifold with boundary. The boundary hosts the complex scalar that provides axion strings through standard mechanisms. In addition, we study how these scenarios may arise in heterotic string theory and type II string compactifications.

  1. Suppressing Extra-Dimensional Axion Isocurvature Dynamically

    hep-ph 2026-07 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

Radion dynamics in warped 5D models enhance the axion decay constant during inflation, satisfying CMB isocurvature bounds at higher Hubble scales while restoring the QCD window afterward.

  2. The String Theory Photoverse

    hep-th 2025-10 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

Massless string-theory hidden photons acquire dimension-six dipole couplings to SM fermions with suppression scale Λ = αM_s, converting dipole measurements into constraints on the string scale.

  3. The Minimal High-Quality QCD Axion

    hep-ph 2026-07 conditional novelty 5.5 of 10

A flat-interval 5D U(1) Wilson-line axion with 4D KSVZ/DFSZ anomaly sector supplies exponential quality protection while remaining minimal.

  4. Axions at the meV Crossroads: Theory, Cosmology, Astrophysics, and Experiments

    hep-ph 2026-03 conditional novelty 2.0 of 10

The meV axion window is presented as a coherent, cross-validated search program in which string theory, stellar cooling, dark matter, and new detector concepts converge on the same mass range.
