If a Z' gauge boson of a gauged L_mu - L_tau symmetry is very light, it is associated with a long-range leptonic force. In this case the particles in the Sun create via mixing of Z' with the Standard Model Z a flavor-dependent potential for muon neutrinos in terrestrial long-baseline experiments. The potential changes sign for anti-neutrinos and hence can lead to apparent differences in neutrino and anti-neutrino oscillations without introducing CP or CPT violation. This could for instance explain the recently found discrepancy in the survival probabilities of muon neutrinos and anti-neutrinos in the MINOS experiment. We obtain the associated parameters of gauged L_mu - L_tau required to explain this anomaly. The consequences for future long-baseline experiments and for the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon are discussed. The main feature of our explanation is that atmospheric neutrino mixing has to be non-maximal. Neutrino masses tend to be quasi-degenerate.

  1. Probing Neutrinophilic Long-Range Forces at DUNE

    hep-ph 2026-07 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

DUNE's long baseline can exclude previously unexplored regions of neutrinophilic long-range force parameter space and map them onto cosmologically relevant neutrino self-interaction strengths.

  2. Constraints on long-range neutrino interactions from a variety of $U(1)^\prime$ symmetries using atmospheric neutrinos at IceCube DeepCore

    hep-ph 2026-06 unverdicted novelty 6.0 of 10

No evidence for long-range neutrino interactions from a broad class of anomaly-free U(1)' symmetries is found in 8 years of IceCube DeepCore atmospheric data, producing stringent constraints on the corresponding LRI p...

  3. Generalised $\mu$-$\tau$ symmetries and calculable gauge kinetic and mass mixing in $U(1)_{L_\mu-L_\tau}$ models

    hep-ph 2019-09 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

The authors compute the previously arbitrary Z-Z' kinetic and mass mixing at one loop in two L_mu-L_tau models, finding a suppressed mixing in a seesaw version and a non-decoupling mixing in a vectorlike-lepton version.

  4. Probing long-range $L_e-L_\mu$ forces with supernova neutronization burst neutrinos

    hep-ph 2026-07 accept novelty 5.5 of 10

DUNE can use a nearby supernova neutronization burst to constrain ultralight Le−Lμ gauge forces via distortions of the electron-neutrino survival probability.
