The HERMES high-resolution spectrograph project aims at exploiting the specific potential of small but flexible telescopes in observational astrophysics. The optimised optical design of the spectrograph is based on the well-proven concept of white-pupil beam folding for high-resolution spectroscopy. In this contribution we present the complete project, including the spectrograph design and procurement details, the telescope adaptor and calibration unit, the detector system, as well as the optimised data-reduction pipeline. We present a detailed performance analysis to show that the spectrograph performs as specified both in optical quality and in total efficiency. With a spectral resolution of 85000 (63000 for the low-resolution fibre), a spectral coverage from 377 to 900nm in a single exposure and a peak efficiency of 28%, HERMES proves to be an ideal instrument for building up time series of high-quality data of variable (stellar) phenomena.

  1. Asteroseismic forward modelling of 36 $\beta$ Cep pulsators and inferences on their internal differential rotation

    astro-ph.SR 2026-07 conditional novelty 6.5 of 10

Forward modelling of 36 β Cep stars with second-order rotation effects shows internal rotation declining with age and common radial differential rotation, often non-monotonic, in 17 stars.

  2. The symphony of pulsations and binarity among massive stars using HERMES spectroscopy and TESS photometry

    astro-ph.SR 2026-08 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

An ensemble analysis of 873 O/B stars shows photometric variability in >93%, pulsations in ~82%, and evidence of binarity in at least 14%, including 30 newly discovered eclipsing binaries.

  3. Unravelling Mass Transfer in Algols from Surface Abundances. I. Z Vulpeculae

    astro-ph.SR 2026-08 reject novelty 5.0 of 10

Z Vul's donor star shows a C/N ratio of 2.14, lacking the deep carbon depletion expected after mass stripping, and the fitted models favor nearly conservative Case A mass transfer.

  4. OCCAM X. Neutron Capture Abundances with Keck/HIRES & Magellan/MIKE

    astro-ph.GA 2026-07 unverdicted novelty 5.0 of 10

New high-resolution spectra yield abundances for 7 neutron-capture elements in open cluster stars, revealing flat Milky Way gradients for second-peak s- and r-process species and shallower slopes for first-peak s-process.

  5. Observational Signatures and Constraints on the Intermediate Neutron-Capture Process. The Case of the CEMP star TYC 6044-714-1 (RAVE J094921.8-161722)

    astro-ph.SR 2026-05 conditional novelty 5.0 of 10

Abundances and Ba isotopic ratios in TYC 6044-714-1 are best reproduced by s+r nucleosynthesis models; i+s+r models require extreme conditions and fail to match the full pattern.

  6. Observational Signatures and Constraints on the Intermediate Neutron-Capture Process. The Case of the CEMP star TYC 6044-714-1 (RAVE J094921.8-161722)

    astro-ph.SR 2026-05 unverdicted novelty 4.0 of 10

High-precision analysis of TYC 6044-714-1 favors s+r nucleosynthesis over i-process models, which require implausible conditions and mismatch Ba isotopes.

  7. Observational Signatures and Constraints on the Intermediate Neutron-Capture Process. The Case of the CEMP star TYC 6044-714-1 (RAVE J094921.8-161722)

    astro-ph.SR 2026-05 conditional novelty 4.0 of 10

High-precision abundances and Ba isotopic ratios in TYC 6044-714-1 favor an s+r nucleosynthesis scenario over i-process models, which require implausible conditions and mismatch isotopic data.
