abstract

We study experimental and cosmological constraints on the extension of the Standard Model by three right handed neutrinos with masses between those of the pion and W boson. We combine for the first time direct, indirect and cosmological constraints in this mass range. This includes experimental constraints from neutrino oscillation data, neutrinoless double $\beta$ decay, electroweak precision data, lepton universality, searches for rare lepton decays, tests of CKM unitarity and past direct searches at colliders or fixed target experiments. On the cosmological side, big bang nucleosynthesis has the most pronounced impact. Our results can be used to evaluate the discovery potential of searches for heavy neutrinos at LHCb, BELLE II, SHiP, ATLAS, CMS or a future lepton collider.

  1. Freeze-in leptogenesis with sterile neutrino self-interactions

    hep-ph 2024-12 conditional novelty 7.0 of 10

An off-diagonal thermal potential from sterile neutrino self-interactions generates the baryon asymmetry at lower order in the Yukawa coupling, boosting it and relaxing the mass degeneracy required in vanilla ARS lept...

  2. Simulations of the Sterile Neutrino Oscillations with a Crossing-Width Term

    hep-ph 2024-12 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

A two-step diagonalization plus a dummy-particle trick lets standard event generators simulate GeV-scale sterile neutrino oscillations with crossing-width terms, and a QFT derivation gives displaced-vertex distances.

  3. Probing Solar Heavy Neutrinos with Heliospheric Electrons

    astro-ph.HE 2024-12 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

Using Ulysses and SOHO MeV electron data, the authors set the strongest direct upper bound U_e^2 ~ 10^-6 on solar-produced heavy neutral leptons, reaching that value at a mass near 10 MeV.
