abstract

We discuss how to perform consistent extractions of anomalous triple gauge couplings (aTGC) from electroweak boson pair production at the LHC in the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT). After recasting recent ATLAS and CMS searches in $pp\to WZ (WW) \to \ell' \nu \ell^+\ell^- (\nu_{\ell})$ channels, we find that: (a) working consistently at order $\Lambda^{-2}$ in the SMEFT expansion the existing aTGC bounds from Higgs and LEP-2 data are not improved, (b) the strong limits quoted by the experimental collaboration are due to the partial $\Lambda^{-4}$ corrections (dimension-6 squared contributions). Using helicity selection rule arguments we are able to explain the suppression in some of the interference terms, and discuss conditions on New Physics (NP) models that can benefit from such LHC analyses. Furthermore, standard analyses assume implicitly a quite large NP scale, an assumption that can be relaxed by imposing cuts on the underlying scale of the process ($\sqrt{\hat{s}}$). In practice, we find almost no correlation between $\sqrt{\hat{s}}$ and the experimentally accessible quantities, which complicates the SMEFT interpretation. Nevertheless, we provide a method to set (conservative) aTGC bounds in this situation, and recast the present searches accordingly. Finally, we introduce a simple NP model for aTGC to compare the bounds obtained directly in the model with those from the SMEFT analysis.

  1. Dimension-8 operators in $W^+W^-$ production via gluon fusion

    hep-ph 2024-12 conditional novelty 7.0 of 10

The full set of CP-even dimension-8 SMEFT amplitudes for gluon-fusion W+W- production is computed; their SM interference is shown to be negligible under EFT hierarchy, and new operator constraints are derived.

  2. Anomalous triple gauge couplings in the light of dimension-8 operators in $W^+W^-$

    hep-ph 2026-07 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

Bosonic dimension-8 operators in γγ-initiated WW production dominate over qqbar and set the practical EFT validity scale, yielding validity-aware constraints on dimension-6 Wilson coefficients.

  3. Matrix element method at NLO: A fine proof of concept in POWHEG

    hep-ph 2026-06 unverdicted novelty 6.0 of 10

Proof-of-concept for NLO matrix element method via POWHEG projections applied to fully leptonic WW production in SMEFT, demonstrating near-optimal classification of BSM versus SM events using lepton correlations.

  4. On the EFT validity for Drell-Yan tails at the LHC

    hep-ph 2024-12 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

For t-channel mediators such as the U1 leptoquark, Drell-Yan EFT bounds are accurate at the 10% level for masses above about 1.5 TeV when the series is truncated at amplitude level, while s-channel mediators need E mu...
