abstract

Global gauge anomalies in $6d$ associated with non-trivial homotopy groups $\pi_6(G)$ for $G=SU(2)$, $SU(3)$, and $G_2$ were computed and utilized in the past. In the modern bordism point of view of anomalies, however, they come from the bordism groups $\Omega^\text{spin}_7(BG)$, which are in fact trivial and therefore preclude their existence. Instead, it was noticed that a proper treatment of the $6d$ Green-Schwarz mechanism reproduces the same anomaly cancellation conditions derived from $\pi_6(G)$. In this paper, we revisit and clarify the relation between these two different approaches.

  1. On Quantum Aspects of 1-Form Symmetries II: Bordism, Invertible Phases, and Anomalies

    hep-th 2026-06 unverdicted novelty 7.0 of 10

Bordism computation for K(Z,3) identifies a new mixed perturbative anomaly in 5D and a new Z2 discrete anomaly in 7D for U(1) 1-form symmetries.

  2. Global anomalies in $6D$ gauged supergravities

    hep-th 2025-07 conditional novelty 7.0 of 10

    New anomaly-free six-dimensional R-symmetry gauged supergravities are presented, and global anomaly freedom is shown to impose the constraints n_V ≡ 8 mod 12 (U(1)_R) and n_V = 60 (Sp(1)_R).

  3. Anomaly Matching in 6d $\mathcal{N}=(2,0)$ SCFTs from M5 Cobordism

    hep-th 2025-01 conditional novelty 7.0 of 10

M5 bordism classifies the invertible phases of 6d (2,0) anomaly theories, and the Hopf-Wess-Zumino term is the phase that transgresses to the second Pontryagin class.

  4. Diagonally gauged anomaly-free 6D supergravities and their vacua

    hep-th 2026-07 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

Bounded scans yield 706 single-factor and 1559 two-factor anomaly-free 6D (1,0) models gauged by a diagonal U(1)_R+, and explicit supersymmetric Minkowski vacua for a subset.

  5. Non-supersymmetric branes and discrete topological terms

    hep-th 2025-07 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

A direct computation from the tentative NS5-brane spectrum gives the opposite Z3 topological term (1/3 vs 2/3) from Tachikawa-Zhang, so the spectrum or the inflow interpretation must change.
