This paper explores methods for constructing low multipole temperature and polarisation likelihoods from maps of the cosmic microwave background anisotropies that have complex noise properties and partial sky coverage. We use Planck 2018 High Frequency Instrument (HFI) and updated SRoll2 temperature and polarisation maps to test our methods. We present three likelihood approximations based on quadratic cross spectrum estimators: (i) a variant of the simulation-based likelihood (SimBaL) techniques used in the Planck legacy papers to produce a low multipole EE likelihood; (ii) a semi-analytical likelihood approximation (momento) based on the principle of maximum entropy; (iii) a density-estimation `likelihood-free' scheme (DELFI). Approaches (ii) and (iii) can be generalised to produce low multipole joint temperature-polarisation (TTTEEE) likelihoods. We present extensive tests of these methods on simulations with realistic correlated noise. We then analyse the Planck data and confirm the robustness of our method and likelihoods on multiple inter- and intra-frequency detector set combinations of SRoll2 maps. The three likelihood techniques give consistent results and support a low value of the optical depth to reoinization, tau, from the HFI. Our best estimate of tau comes from combining the low multipole SRoll2 momento (TTTEEE) likelihood with the CamSpec high multipole likelihood and is tau = 0.0627+0.0050-0.0058. This is consistent with the SRoll2 team's determination of tau, though slightly higher by 0.5 sigma, mainly because of our joint treatment of temperature and polarisation.

  1. Boosting the optical depth to Thomson scattering with primordial black hole evaporation at high redshift

    astro-ph.CO 2026-08 accept novelty 6.0

A monochromatic primordial black hole population can raise the CMB optical depth by at most Delta tau ~ 0.008 under current CMB data, leaving BAO-CMB tensions essentially unchanged.

  2. Ringing of the Reionization: A first direct measurement of the intergalactic pressure smoothing scale at redshift z>4.2 as imprinted onto small-scale peculiar velocities in the Lyman-alpha forest

    astro-ph.CO 2026-07 reject novelty 6.0

A claimed first direct measurement of the IGM pressure smoothing scale at z≈4.2–5.0 from a fitted peak in the Lyman-alpha flux power spectrum, tied to an acoustic feature in the peculiar velocity gradient.

  3. Cosmological Concordance in an Especially Opaque Universe: A Tentative Cosmological Detection of Physical Neutrino Mass in $\Lambda$CDM

    astro-ph.CO 2026-06 conditional novelty 6.0

Assuming τ=0.11±0.006 yields a 2σ positive neutrino mass detection (Σmν=0.10^{+0.04}_{-0.05} eV) and removes CMB-DESI tensions within ΛCDM.

  4. Compressed Gaussian likelihood for the Planck low-$\ell$ data

    astro-ph.CO 2026-06 unverdicted novelty 5.0

A compressed Gaussian likelihood for Planck low-ℓ data is built from SRoll2 via offset log-normal functions for Fisher compatibility and validated against the original via MCMC.

  5. The End of the First Act: Spectral Running, Interacting Dark Radiation, and the Hubble Tension in Light of ACT DR6 Data

    astro-ph.CO 2026-04 unverdicted novelty 5.0

Including spectral running α_s, β_s and self-interacting dark radiation relaxes the ACT DR6 bound on ΔN_eff to <0.58 and lowers the Hubble tension to 2.2σ with three extra parameters.

  6. The Impact of Population III.1 Flash Reionization for CMB Polarization and Thomson Scattering Optical Depth

    astro-ph.CO 2025-10 conditional novelty 5.0

An early 'Pop III.1 Flash' reionization phase shifts CMB polarization power from l<8 to l>8, allowing a higher optical depth τ≈0.08–0.09 while staying closer to Planck's low-l EE data than a standard tanh reionization model.

  7. Late Time Dynamical Dark Energy and the CMB-Distance Ladder Tension

    astro-ph.CO 2026-07 conditional novelty 4.0

The SNIa absolute-magnitude tension between the distance ladder (−19.204) and CMB+ΛCDM (−19.430) is independent of late-time expansion history, and DESI's w0–wa dark-energy hints shift H0 by only ~0.3–0.4 km/s/Mpc.

  8. Cosmological Concordance in an Especially Opaque Universe: A Tentative Cosmological Detection of Physical Neutrino Mass in $\Lambda$CDM

    astro-ph.CO 2026-06 reject novelty 3.0

Imposing a high prior on τ = 0.11 ± 0.006 produces a 2σ positive neutrino mass sum of 0.10 eV and restores concordance between CMB and DESI data inside ΛCDM.
