In this work, we review the effective field theory framework to search for Lorentz and CPT symmetry breaking during the propagation of gravitational waves. The article is written so as to bridge the gap between the theory of spacetime-symmetry breaking and the analysis of gravitational-waves signals detected by ground-based interferometers. The primary physical effects beyond General Relativity that we explore here are dispersion and birefringence of gravitational waves. We discuss their implementation in the open-source LIGO-Virgo algorithm library suite, as well as the statistical method used to perform a Bayesian inference of the posterior probability of the coefficients for symmetry-breaking. We present preliminary results of this work in the form of simulations of modified gravitational waveforms, together with sensitivity studies of the measurements of the coefficients for Lorentz and CPT violation. The findings show the high potential of gravitational wave sources across the sky to probe sensitively for these signals of new physics.

  1. Gravitational-wave generation in the presence of Lorentz invariance violation

    gr-qc 2025-06 conditional novelty 7.0 of 10

Gravitational waves in a class of Lorentz-violating gravity theories would have amplitude components that do not decay with distance, strongly constraining those theories.

  2. Constraints on parity and Lorentz violations from gravitational waves: a comparison between single-parameter and multi-parameter analysis

    gr-qc 2025-07 conditional novelty 5.0 of 10

Multi-parameter and single-parameter gravitational-wave analyses yield comparable parity and Lorentz violation constraints for three models, but degeneracies weaken the multi-parameter result when two parameters modif...

  3. Constraining Lorentz and parity violations in gravity with multiband gravitational wave observations

    gr-qc 2026-01 conditional novelty 4.0 of 10

Future multiband GW networks could tighten Lorentz- and parity-violation energy-scale bounds by up to several orders of magnitude, with massive binaries best for low-frequency and loud binaries for high-frequency effects.
