We show that double field theory arises from the color-kinematic double copy of Yang-Mills theory. A precise double copy prescription for the Yang-Mills action at quadratic and cubic order is provided that yields the double field theory action in which the duality invariant dilaton has been integrated out. More precisely, at quadratic order this yields the gauge invariant double field theory, while at cubic order it yields the cubic double field theory action subject to a gauge condition that originates from Siegel gauge in string field theory.

From noncommutative Yang-Mills to noncommutative gravity through a classical double copy map
The classical double copy of noncommutative Yang-Mills yields a theta-squared-corrected cubic double field theory action whose pure gravity limit is Einstein-Hilbert plus Riemann-cubed terms in D=4 transverse-traceless gauge.

Double Copy Map for Double Field Theory on an Arbitrary Constant Background
A double copy map from two Yang-Mills theories around background gauge fields yields the double field theory action on an arbitrary constant background, up to third order.

Lecture notes: Introduction to the Off-shell Double Copy Program
Self-contained lecture notes introduce the off-shell single/double copy relating Yang-Mills and DFDF gauge theories to Einstein-Hilbert, Weyl gravity and NS-NS supergravity via Kerr-Schild and Double Field Theory.
