The neutrino fast flavor instability (FFI) can change neutrino flavor on time scales of nanoseconds and length scales of centimeters. It is expected to be ubiquitous in core-collapse supernovae and neutron star mergers, potentially modifying the neutrino signal we see, how matter is ejected from these explosions, and the types of heavy elements that form in the ejecta and enrich the universe. There has been a great deal of recent interest in understanding the role the FFI plays in supernovae and mergers, but the short length and time scales and the strong nonlinearity have prevented the FFI from being included consistently in these models. We review the theoretical nature of the FFI starting with the quantum kinetic equations, where the instability exists in neutron star mergers and supernovae, and how the instability behaves after saturation in simplified simulations. We review the proposed methods to test for instability in moment-based calculations where the full distribution is not available and describe the numerical methods used to simulate the instability directly. Finally, we close by outlining the trajectory toward realistic, self-consistent models that will allow a more complete understanding of the impact of the FFI in supernovae and mergers.

  1. Flavomons in Matter Gradients: Ray Tracing and Amplitude Evolution

    hep-ph 2026-04 unverdicted novelty 7.0 of 10

Matter gradients slow but do not suppress neutrino-mass-induced flavor instabilities, so flavomon ray tracing is required instead of local stability analysis alone.

  2. Predicting the outcome of collisional neutrino flavor conversion

    hep-ph 2025-05 conditional novelty 7.0 of 10

Collisional neutrino flavor instabilities settle into a state at the edge of instability with nonzero flavor coherence, and explicit formulas predict this final state.

  3. Solar-System Abundances of $p$-Nuclides Probe Collective Neutrino Oscillations in Supernovae

    hep-ph 2026-07 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

Nearby neutrino flavor conversion in a supernova can boost νp-process yields of p-nuclides like 92Mo and 92Nb by up to two orders of magnitude, matching solar abundances when conversion starts within ~10 km of the pro...

  4. Comparative Testing of Subgrid Models for Fast Neutrino Flavor Conversions in Core-collapse Supernova Simulations

    astro-ph.HE 2025-06 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

A 1D supernova simulation with four-species BGK subgrid modeling shows that three-species assumptions overestimate flavor conversion and that semi-implicit time integration is the most reliable.

  5. Estimating amplitude of matter density fluctuations in solar and supernova models using neutrino flavor evolution

    astro-ph.HE 2026-07 conditional novelty 5.0 of 10

SDA recovers density-fluctuation amplitudes from boundary neutrino flavor data in simplified solar and CCSN models, more reliably for the Sun and at high noise in CCSN.
