abstract

We construct data-driven solutions to the Hubble tension which are perturbative modifications to the fiducial $\Lambda$CDM cosmology, using the Fisher bias formalism. Taking as proof of principle the case of a time-varying electron mass and fine structure constant, and focusing first on Planck CMB data, we demonstrate that a modified recombination can solve the Hubble tension and lower $S_8$ to match weak lensing measurements. Once baryonic acoustic oscillation and uncalibrated supernovae data are included, however, it is not possible to fully solve the tension with perturbative modifications to recombination.

  1. Early- and late-time constraints on Wald-Gauss-Bonnet topological dark energy and implications for the $H_0$ and $S_8$ tensions

    gr-qc 2026-07 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

A joint CMB, BAO, and supernova fit mildly prefers a non-zero Wald-Gauss-Bonnet dark-energy term (~3σ with SH0ES included), raising H0 from 68.5 to 69.8 km/s/Mpc and easing the Hubble tension by ~0.9σ at the cost of a...

  2. Hubble tension: the shape wall

    astro-ph.CO 2026-07 accept novelty 6.0 of 10

Late-time modifications to the expansion history can raise H0 by at most about 2% (conservative) to 3.7% (permissive) if the CMB acoustic scale is fixed.

  3. The $H_0$ world cup. II. A comprehensive competition between proposed Hubble tension solutions

    astro-ph.CO 2026-07 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

Against a common 2025-26 dataset (Planck PR4, ACT DR6, SPT-3G, DESI DR2, Pantheon+), early dark energy and early modified gravity models win the H0 competition (~3σ residual tension), while radiation and late-time sol...

  4. Searching for coupled, hyperlight scalars across cosmic history

    hep-ph 2025-02 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

Hyperlight quadratically coupled scalars making up a few percent of dark matter are bounded to near- or sub-gravitational couplings to electrons and photons over 10^-31 to 10^-28 eV, with quasar spectra setting the st...

  5. Modified recombination and the Hubble tension

    astro-ph.CO 2024-11 conditional novelty 5.0 of 10

A selected modified recombination history fitted to Planck and DESI data raises the inferred Hubble constant to about 71 km/s/Mpc, reducing the SH0ES tension to below 2 sigma; a smooth four-parameter shape captures mu...

  6. Neutrino mass constraints in the Schwarzschild-de Sitter black-hole dark energy model with ACT DR6 and DESI DR2 data

    astro-ph.CO 2026-07 conditional novelty 4.5 of 10

SdSDE dark energy yields a ~0.16–0.21 eV positive neutrino-mass preference with DESI+ACT data, but χ² strongly favors extended ΛCDM and the shift is likely compensation.

  7. The Hubble tension: A decade review

    astro-ph.CO 2026-06 unverdicted novelty 3.0 of 10

Pure early or late fixes to the Hubble tension are tightly constrained; remaining options are combined early-late interacting dark energy or new physics at the local-to-homogeneous transition.

  8. Alleviating the Hubble Tension via Cosmological Time Dilation in the meVSL Model

    physics.gen-ph 2025-09 reject novelty 3.0 of 10

The meVSL model's parameter b reduces the baryon drag sound horizon, raising inferred H0, and changes the cosmological time-dilation exponent to n=1-b/4; the paper forecasts SN sample sizes to detect this.
