abstract

In the Standard Model (SM), the rare transitions where a bottom quark decays into a strange quark and a pair of light leptons exhibit a potential sensitivity to physics beyond the SM. In addition, the SM embeds Lepton Flavour Universality (LFU), leading to almost identical probabilities for muon and electron modes. The LHCb collaboration discovered a set of deviations from the SM expectations in decays to muons and also in ratios assessing LFU. Other experiments (Belle, ATLAS, CMS) found consistent measurements, albeit with large error bars. We perform a global fit to all available $b\to s\ell^+\ell^-$ data ($\ell=e,\mu$) in a model-independent way allowing for different patterns of New Physics. For the first time, the NP hypothesis is preferred over the SM by $5\,\sigma$ in a general case when NP can enter SM-like operators and their chirally-flipped partners. LFU violation is favoured with respect to LFU at the 3-4$\,\sigma$ level. We discuss the impact of LFU-violating New Physics on the observable $P_5^\prime$ from $B \to K^*\mu^+\mu^-$ and we compare our estimate for long-distance charm contributions with an empirical model recently proposed by a group of LHCb experimentalists. Finally, we discuss NP models able to describe this consistent pattern of deviations.

  1. Higgs bosons with large couplings to light quarks

    hep-ph 2019-08 conditional novelty 7.0 of 10

New SFV two-Higgs-doublet models allow electroweak-scale Higgs bosons with order-0.1 light-quark couplings, consistent with all current flavor and collider bounds.

  2. Light-Cone Sum Rules for $B\to K\pi$ Form Factors and Applications to Rare Decays

    hep-ph 2019-08 accept novelty 7.0 of 10

P-wave B→Kπ form factors are derived from light-cone sum rules with B-meson distribution amplitudes, and the K* width is shown to produce a universal ~10% form-factor increase, corresponding to a ~20% rate enhancement.

  3. With or without U(2)? Probing non-standard flavor and helicity structures in semileptonic B decays

    hep-ph 2019-09 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

Under the minimally-broken U(2)_q × U(2)_ℓ flavor symmetry hypothesis, semileptonic B decay amplitudes are controlled by a few parameters, yielding testable correlations such as equal new-physics effects in b→u and b→...

  4. Exhaustive Model Selection in $b \to s \ell \ell$ Decays: Pitting Cross-Validation against AIC$_c$

    hep-ph 2019-08 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

An exhaustive model selection over 511 Wilson-coefficient combinations for b to s l l decays finds that all surviving scenarios contain O9 (Delta C9 near -1.1 to -1.4), the only surviving one-operator scenario.

  5. Impact of Hadronic Resonances on $B\to K^{(*)}\tau^+\tau^-$ decays

    hep-ph 2026-05 unverdicted novelty 5.0 of 10

Including resonant contributions from LHCb muon data enhances standard model predictions for B to K(*) tau tau decays and makes short-distance new physics comparable to or larger than resonant effects over the full q2 range.

  6. Resolving the $(g-2)_{\mu}$ and $B$ anomalies with leptoquarks and a dark Higgs boson

    hep-ph 2019-08 conditional novelty 5.0 of 10

A model with a light dark Higgs and TeV-scale leptoquarks can simultaneously explain the muon g-2 and B decay anomalies, and predicts rare B, K, and Higgs decays within reach of current experiments.

  7. Flavour anomalies and (fundamental) partial compositeness

    hep-ph 2019-07 unverdicted novelty 5.0 of 10

Partial compositeness in the minimal fundamental partial compositeness (MFPC) model explains B-meson flavour anomalies while also solving the SM naturalness problem.

  8. Scalar dark matter, Neutrino mass and Leptogenesis in a $\rm U(1)_{B-L}$ model

    hep-ph 2019-08 conditional novelty 4.0 of 10

A U(1)B-L model with four anomaly-cancelling fermions can satisfy dark matter relic density and direct detection bounds, neutrino oscillation data, and the observed baryon asymmetry through resonant leptogenesis.

  9. Fitting in or odd one out? Pulls vs residual responses in $b\to s \ell^+\ell^-$

    hep-ph 2019-08 accept novelty 4.0 of 10

The updated LHCb R_K measurement shifts the best-fit new physics in b→sμμ transitions toward smaller C10mu and reduces its uncertainty.

    hep-ph 2019-06 unverdicted novelty 4.0 of 10

Four models for combined explanation of B anomalies are tested with general couplings, excluding three and constraining the fourth.
