Classical black holes contain a singularity at their core. This has prompted various researchers to propose a multitude of modified spacetimes that mimic the physically observable characteristics of classical black holes as best as possible, but that crucially do not contain singularities at their cores. Due to recent advances in near-horizon astronomy, the ability to observationally distinguish between a classical black hole and a potential black hole mimicker is becoming increasingly feasible. Herein, we calculate some physically observable quantities for a recently proposed regular black hole with an asymptotically Minkowski core -- the radius of the photon sphere and the extremal stable timelike circular orbit (ESCO). The manner in which the photon sphere and ESCO relate to the presence (or absence) of horizons is much more complex than for the Schwarzschild black hole. We find situations in which photon spheres can approach arbitrarily close to (near extremal) horizons, situations in which some photon spheres become stable, and situations in which the locations of both photon spheres and ESCOs become multi-valued, with both ISCOs (innermost stable circular orbits) and OSCOs (outermost stable circular orbits). This provides an extremely rich phenomenology of potential astrophysical interest.

  1. Violations of the null convergence condition in kinematical transitions between singular and regular black holes, horizonless compact objects, and bounces

    gr-qc 2025-02 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

During kinematical transitions between singular and regular black holes, horizonless compact objects, and bounces, the null convergence condition is violated even when both endpoint spacetimes respect it.

  2. Observational properties of regular black holes in Asymptotic Safety

    gr-qc 2025-04 conditional novelty 5.0 of 10

As the asymptotic-safety parameter ξ grows, the shadow shrinks, the innermost orbit moves inward, and the accretion disk becomes brighter and more efficient than in Schwarzschild.

  3. Influence of external magnetic fields on charged particle motion around a Schwarzschild-like black hole

    gr-qc 2025-06 reject novelty 4.0 of 10

The paper derives ISCO radii, collision energies, and QPO frequencies for charged particles around a Schwarzschild-like black hole in an external magnetic field, but the dimensionless equations contain an internal inc...

  4. Traversable Wormholes with Spontaneous Symmetry Breaking

    gr-qc 2024-11 reject novelty 3.0 of 10

The paper constructs phantom-scalar wormhole metrics and reverse-engineers a symmetry-breaking potential, but the solution does not satisfy the stated field equations for generic parameters and the photon-sphere radiu...

  5. Towards a Non-singular Paradigm of Black Hole Physics

    gr-qc 2025-01 unverdicted novelty 1.0 of 10

This is a review built around a week-long workshop, synthesizing the state and open problems of regular black holes and black hole mimickers as alternatives to singular black holes.
