We consider `minimal' Z' models, whose phenomenology is controlled by only three parameters beyond the Standard Model ones: the Z' mass and two effective coupling constants. They encompass many popular models motivated by grand unification, as well as many arising in other theoretical contexts. This parameterization takes also into account both mass and kinetic mixing effects, which we show to be sizable in some cases. After discussing the interplay between the bounds from electroweak precision tests and recent direct searches at the Tevatron, we extend our analysis to estimate the early LHC discovery potential. We consider a center-of-mass energy from 7 towards 10 TeV and an integrated luminosity from 50 to several hundred pb^-1, taking all existing bounds into account. We find that the LHC will start exploring virgin land in parameter space for M_Z' around 700 GeV, with lower masses still excluded by the Tevatron and higher masses still excluded by electroweak precision tests. Increasing the energy up to 10 TeV, the LHC will start probing a wider range of Z' masses and couplings, although several hundred pb^-1 will be needed to explore the regions of couplings favored by grand unification and to overcome the Tevatron bounds in the mass region around 250 GeV.

  1. Combination of searches for heavy vector boson resonances in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

    hep-ex 2026-01 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

A CMS combination of searches finds no heavy vector boson resonance and excludes HVT W′/Z′ bosons below 5.5 TeV (weak coupling), 4.8 TeV (strong coupling), and 2.0 TeV for VBF production at 95% CL.

  2. Displaced heavy neutrinos from $Z'$ decays at the LHC

    hep-ph 2019-08 conditional novelty 5.0 of 10

Displaced vertex searches at the HL-LHC could probe heavy neutrino mixings down to |V_lN|^2 ~ 10^-17 for Z'-produced neutrinos in U(1)_X and U(1)_{B-L} models.

  3. The $Z'$-boson of the $B-L$ Supersymmetric Standard Model and its Large Hadron Collider Searches

    hep-ph 2026-06 unverdicted novelty 4.0 of 10

In the BLSSM, Z' masses down to 2.24 TeV remain allowed when the boson is fat, leptophobic, or has large branching ratios to model-specific states while respecting LEP/SLC and LHC constraints.
