A central problem in quantum condensed matter physics is the critical theory governing the zero temperature quantum phase transition between strongly renormalized Fermi-liquids as found in heavy fermion intermetallics and possibly high Tc superconductors. We present here results showing that the mathematics of string theory is capable of describing such fermionic quantum critical states. Using the Anti-de-Sitter/Conformal Field Theory (AdS/CFT) correspondence to relate fermionic quantum critical fields to a gravitational problem, we compute the spectral functions of fermions in the field theory. By increasing the fermion density away from the relativistic quantum critical point, a state emerges with all the features of the Fermi-liquid.

  1. Holographic Learning from Fermionic Spectra: Application to Strange Metal Phenomenology

    hep-th 2026-07 conditional novelty 7.0 of 10

Neural ODEs learn that normalized low-T cuprate PLL spectra are well described by conformal-to-AdS2 black holes with nearly vanishing gauge potential, while thermodynamics remain invisible to the massless probe.

  2. Disordered Charged Horizons

    hep-th 2025-09 conditional novelty 7.0 of 10

Fully backreacted disordered charged black branes show disorder survives in the infrared of AdS4, producing residual resistivity, but decays in AdS3, indicating a Harris-criterion violation in strongly coupled systems.

  3. Analytical Structure and Spectroscopic Signatures of Quartic Nonlinear Electrodynamics in Holographic Fermion Systems

    hep-th 2026-07 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

An F^4-deformed bulk gauge field raises the chemical potential, lowers T/μ, shifts the Fermi momentum upward, and sharpens the holographic spectral peak without destroying the Fermi surface.

  4. Conductivities and excitations of a holographic flavour brane Weyl semimetal

    hep-th 2024-12 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

AC conductivities of the D3/D7 holographic Weyl semimetal show peaks and troughs near the WSM-insulator transition, traced to quasinormal-mode poles with small imaginary parts.

  5. Brickwall One-Loop Determinant: Spectral Statistics & Krylov Complexity

    hep-th 2024-12 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

In the brickwall model of a BTZ black hole, hand-tuned Gaussian randomness at a stretched horizon reproduces random-matrix-theory spectral statistics and Krylov complexity peaks for scalar and fermionic probes.

  6. Holographic Schwinger-Keldysh effective field theories including a non-hydrodynamic mode

    hep-th 2024-11 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

A holographic derivation of Schwinger-Keldysh effective actions for diffusion with a non-hydrodynamic mode, yielding the Maxwell-Cattaneo action for slow modes and a new frequency-dependent action for IR modes.

  7. Spectral weight in holography with momentum relaxation

    hep-th 2019-08 conditional novelty 4.0 of 10

In holographic superfluids with axion-induced momentum relaxation, the finite-momentum instability is strengthened and low-energy spectral weight, including Fermi shells, is suppressed.

  8. The foot, the fan, and the cuprate phase diagram: Fermi-volume-changing quantum phase transitions

    cond-mat.str-el 2025-01 conditional novelty 3.0 of 10

The paper attributes the cuprate 'foot' to a disordered spin-density-wave transition and the 'fan' to a disorder-tuned FL-to-FL* Fermi-volume-changing transition described by a two-dimensional Yukawa-SYK model.
