The central regions of galaxy clusters are permeated by magnetic fields and filled with relativistic electrons. When clusters merge, the magnetic fields are amplified and relativistic electrons are re-accelerated by turbulence in the intra cluster medium. These electrons reach energies of 1 -- 10 GeV and, in the presence of magnetic fields, produce diffuse radio halos that typically cover an area of ~1 square Mpc. Here we report observations of four clusters whose radio halos are embedded in much more extended, diffuse radio emission, filling a volume 30 times larger than that of radio halos. The emissivity in these larger features is about 20 times lower than the emissivity in radio halos. We conclude that relativistic electrons and magnetic fields extend far beyond radio halos, and that the physical conditions in the outer regions of the clusters are quite different from those in the radio halos.

Two-component large-scale radio emission in Abell 2244
Abell 2244 hosts a two-component radio halo whose outer part has a flatter spectral index than megahaloes and a weaker radio-X-ray correlation than the inner halo.

Intensity fluctuations of radio halo in galaxy cluster: Insights from power spectrum estimation
Angular power spectra of 610 MHz radio halos show excess power-law fluctuations only in Abell 2744, requiring multiplicative C_ℓ ∝ ℓ^{-3} structure atop an exponential profile and consistent with ICM turbulence.

Multi-Wavelength Signatures of a Giant Cometary Radio Halo in MACSJ0417-1154
MACSJ0417’s giant radio halo shows spectral steepening and radio–X-ray correlation consistent with turbulence from a 6:1 off-axis merger that preserved the cool core; pure hadronic models are energetically excluded.

The plethora of diffuse emission in Abell 2034 as revealed by MeerKAT polarization observations
MeerKAT polarization and spectral-index data reclassify Abell 2034's diffuse radio sources and favor a ~1 μG intracluster magnetic field (B ∝ n_e^0.5, normalized at R500).

Revisiting Propagation Delays of Ultra-High-Energy Cosmic Rays from Long-lived Sources
Propagation delays of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays in extragalactic magnetic fields can match or exceed AGN duty cycles, weakening the link between detected cosmic rays and their long-lived sources.
