We revisit the physics of neutrino magnetic moments, focusing in particular on the case where the right-handed, or sterile, neutrinos are heavier (up to several MeV) than the left-handed Standard Model neutrinos. The discussion is centered around the idea of detecting an upscattering event mediated by a transition magnetic moment in a neutrino or dark matter experiment. Considering neutrinos from all known sources, as well as including all available data from XENON1T and Borexino, we derive the strongest up-to-date exclusion limits on the active-to-sterile neutrino transition magnetic moment. We then study complementary constraints from astrophysics and cosmology, performing, in particular, a thorough analysis of BBN. We find that these data sets scrutinize most of the relevant parameter space. Explaining the XENON1T excess with transition magnetic moments is marginally possible if conservative assumptions are adopted regarding the supernova 1987A and CMB constraints. Finally, we discuss model-building challenges that arise in scenarios that feature large magnetic moments while keeping neutrino masses well below 1 eV. We present a successful ultraviolet-complete model of this type based on TeV-scale leptoquarks, establishing links with muon magnetic moment, B physics anomalies, and collider searches at the LHC.

  1. Probing Supernova Neutrino Boosted Dark Matter with Collective Excitation

    hep-ph 2025-01 conditional novelty 7.0 of 10

Galactic supernova neutrino boosted dark matter can produce plasmon excitations in silicon detectors, improving sub-MeV dark matter sensitivity by 3 to 4 orders of magnitude over Super-K.

  2. Astrophysical flux of dark particles as a solution to the KM3NeT and IceCube tension over KM3-230213A

    hep-ph 2025-05 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

A transient astrophysical dark-particle flux can explain the KM3NeT 70 PeV muon via in-Earth upscattering and decay to muon pairs, while predicting no IceCube counterpart.

  3. Dirt/Detector/Dump: Complementary BSM production at Short-Baseline Neutrino Facilities

    hep-ph 2025-01 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

Dump-produced heavy neutral leptons contribute substantially to short-baseline neutrino detector signals and can be separated from dirt and detector production by energy, angle, and timing.

  4. Neutrino electromagnetic properties and sterile dipole portal in light of the first solar CE$\nu$NS data

    hep-ph 2024-12 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

The paper derives the first 90% CL limits on neutrino magnetic moments, millicharges, and the sterile dipole portal from solar 8B CEνNS data in XENONnT and PandaX-4T.

  5. Probing Light Dark Particles in Neutrino Scattering Experiments

    hep-ph 2026-02 conditional novelty 5.0 of 10

A dark fermion produced in neutrino scattering could be probed at DUNE's near detector up to cutoff scales near 1 TeV, beyond CHARM II and LEP, while current COHERENT/CONUS+ limits stay below LHC bounds.

  6. Probing conventional and new physics at the ESS with coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering

    hep-ph 2025-01 conditional novelty 5.0 of 10

Projected ESS CEνNS measurements would improve current constraints on the weak mixing angle, nuclear neutron radii, and several new physics scenarios by large factors, and would lead in some unexplored mass ranges.
