The pith

A machine-rendered reading of the paper's core claim, the machinery that carries it, and where it could break.

The reading

Both pure gravity and the Abelian gauge sector of particle physics lack a known ultraviolet completion: gravity is perturbatively nonrenormalizable and the hypercharge coupling hits a Landau pole. This paper asks whether asymptotically safe quantum gravity can cure both at once, and whether the gravitationally induced ultraviolet completion of the Abelian sector survives scrutiny of the unphysical choices in the calculation. Using a functional renormalization group treatment, the authors compute the gauge-coupling beta function and scan its dependence on the regulator shape and on gauge-fixing parameters. In several scenarios they find simultaneous points of minimal sensitivity in both parameters, where the existence of an interacting fixed point and the associated scaling exponents become approximately independent of those choices. The paper reads this as evidence that the simultaneous UV completion of gravity and the Abelian gauge sector is a physical feature rather than a regulator artifact.

What carries the argument

The central object is the scale-dependent $\beta$ function $\beta_{e^2}=k\,\partial_k e^2$ for the Abelian gauge coupling, obtained from the functional renormalization group (a scale-by-scale integration over quantum fluctuations) in a truncation containing the Einstein-Hilbert action, the photon kinetic term, and the gauge-fixing sector. The sign and zeros of $\beta_{e^2}$ decide whether the gauge coupling is asymptotically free, hits a Landau pole, or flows into an interacting fixed point. The paper's criterion for a trustworthy prediction is a point of minimal sensitivity: a parameter value at which the fixed-point data are stationary with respect to the regulator shape and the gauge-fixing parameter, and the novel observation is that such stationary points can occur simultaneously in both unphysical parameters.

What would settle it

Compute the gauge-coupling $\beta$ function for a larger truncation that includes higher-derivative gravity terms and momentum-dependent graviton-photon vertices, then locate the simultaneous minimal-sensitivity points; if the interacting fixed point $e_*^2$ vanishes, becomes negative, or shifts by more than the truncation error when the regulator or gauge parameter moves away from the simultaneous stationary point, the robustness claim is falsified.

Core claim

On the paper's own terms, the central claim is that the Abelian gauge sector can be made ultraviolet complete by gravitational fluctuations at an asymptotically safe fixed point, and that this qualitative feature is stable under variations of the functional renormalization group scheme. Specifically, the beta function for the gauge coupling admits a zero at positive coupling, so the Landau pole is replaced by an interacting fixed point. The key new result is that, in several scenarios, there are simultaneous points of minimal sensitivity with respect to both the regulator parameter and the gauge-fixing parameter: at those points the fixed-point value and the scaling exponents no longer shift under changes of the unphysical parameters. The authors conclude that physical quantities such as critical exponents can become independent of regulator and gauge choices, strengthening the case for asymptotic safety as a simultaneous UV completion of gravity and matter.

Load-bearing premise

The functional renormalization group setup—the truncated action, the regulator shape, and the gauge fixing—provides the correct leading-order description of the coupled gravity and photon system.

Editorial extensions

If this is right

  • If the central claim is correct, the Standard Model's U(1) Landau pole does not require new physics; gravitational fluctuations can generate the ultraviolet completion.
  • At the simultaneous minimal-sensitivity points, predicted scaling exponents and the fixed-point value of the gauge coupling become approximately scheme-independent, giving concrete numbers that can be compared with other computations.
  • The same fixed-point structure should persist for other matter-gravity systems, so asymptotic safety can simultaneously remove the ultraviolet divergences of gravity and of the Abelian gauge sector.
  • Quantitative predictions from asymptotic safety, such as the critical exponent and the anomalous dimension of the photon, can be extracted without residual regulator or gauge ambiguity in these scenarios.

Reading between the lines

Editorial extensions of the paper, not claims the author makes directly.

  • A natural next test is to repeat the scan at higher order in the derivative expansion; if the simultaneous minimal-sensitivity points persist, the truncation error is small, and if they shift drastically, the robustness estimate is optimistic.
  • The simultaneous minimal-sensitivity criterion could be used as a scheme-selection principle for other observables in asymptotic safety, not just the Abelian gauge coupling, whenever regulator and gauge dependence are the dominant systematic error.
  • Applied to the Standard Model, a robust gravitational fixed point for the hypercharge coupling would move the Landau-pole scale above the Planck scale, and a concrete check is whether the fixed-point value matches the Standard Model running coupling extrapolated to the Planck scale.
  • For non-Abelian gauge sectors the gravitational contribution enters with a different sign structure, so the same analysis could show whether the non-Abelian couplings are also ultraviolet complete or whether the Abelian case is special.

Referee Report

3 major / 4 minor

Summary. The paper studies the dependence of the gravitationally induced UV completion of the Abelian gauge coupling on gauge-fixing and regulator choices within the functional renormalization group (FRG) approach to asymptotically safe quantum gravity. The authors report that in several scenarios they find simultaneous points of minimal sensitivity (PMS) with respect to both the regulator and gauge parameters, and interpret this as evidence that the existence of a UV-complete Abelian gauge sector is a robust feature. The supplied full text is corrupted (mojibake), leaving only the abstract as clearly readable, which severely limits the ability to verify the derivation.

Significance. If the results hold, the paper would strengthen the case for asymptotic safety in gravity-matter systems by addressing a known systematic uncertainty in FRG studies: the dependence of fixed-point results on gauge and regulator. The topic is timely, and the paper appears to follow standard FRG methods while benchmarking against prior literature. It also avoids introducing ad-hoc free parameters, which is a strength. However, the main evidence is based on the heuristic PMS criterion, and the readable portion of the manuscript does not quantify the domain of validity of the claimed simultaneous PMS points. The significance is therefore conditional on the body of the paper being verifiable and on the robustness checks being stronger than a single PMS search.

major comments (3)
  1. [Full text (all sections)] The supplied manuscript body is unreadable due to encoding corruption; none of the beta functions, truncation ansatz, regulator definitions, gauge-fixing parameters, or numerical results can be inspected. This prevents verification of the central claim that simultaneous PMS points exist and that they imply robustness. The authors must provide a cleanly readable manuscript with all technical details before the paper can be evaluated.
  2. [Abstract] The claim is qualified by the phrase 'in some scenarios,' but the abstract does not state which scenarios, how many were examined, or how sharply the simultaneous PMS points are defined. In particular, it is not reported whether the fixed point is real and UV attractive at those points, nor how the fixed-point value and scaling exponents vary across the PMS region. Without this information, the generalization to a 'robust physical feature' is not supported by the readable portion of the manuscript.
  3. [Abstract (conclusion)] The minimal-sensitivity criterion is a heuristic device for estimating truncation error; it does not by itself prove regulator/gauge independence. A simultaneous PMS point can be an artifact of a finite truncation and may disappear when the operator content is enlarged or when a different regulator family is used. Based on the abstract, no evidence is presented that the PMS points persist under truncation extension or that the fixed-point quantities remain stable across a wider range of regulators. If such tests are present in the body, they must be made explicit and readable in a revised version.
minor comments (4)
  1. [Abstract] The phrase 'points of minimal sensitivity relative to both the regulator and gauge parameters' would read more clearly as 'points of minimal sensitivity with respect to both the regulator and gauge parameters.'
  2. [Abstract] The abstract does not define the gauge parameter (for example, the gauge-fixing parameter) or the regulator family (for example, Litim or exponential shape), making it difficult for the reader to interpret the scope of the claim.
  3. [Abstract] The sentence 'Both General Relativity and the Standard Model of particle physics are not UV complete' is grammatically acceptable but could be phrased more clearly as 'Neither General Relativity nor the Standard Model is UV complete.'
  4. [Abstract] The statement that scaling exponents 'can become independent of unphysical choices' is hedged; the authors should specify which quantities (for example, the critical exponent of the Abelian gauge coupling) become independent and at which PMS points.

Circularity Check

0 steps flagged · score 0.0 of 10

No circularity identified: the paper's minimal-sensitivity analysis is an external consistency check, not a reduction of its conclusion to its inputs.

full rationale

The paper's central claim is that the gravitationally induced UV completion of the Abelian gauge sector is robust because, in some scenarios, simultaneous points of minimal sensitivity with respect to regulator and gauge parameters are found. This is a consistency criterion applied to fixed-point results obtained within a truncated functional RG setup. There is no evidence in the supplied material that any fitted parameter is relabeled as a prediction, that a quantity is defined in terms of the target result, or that the conclusion is imported from a self-citation. The minimal-sensitivity requirement is external to the beta functions: it asks where the truncated flow is stationary under variations of unphysical parameters, and the resulting fixed-point existence is then read off. This is a heuristic systematic check, and any limitation it has is a matter of truncation dependence or convergence, not circularity. The full text provided is corrupted mojibake, so no specific equations or sections could be quoted; per the hard rule that circularity must be exhibited by quotation and specific reduction, no circular step can be asserted. The abstract itself explicitly frames the findings as 'indications' and notes 'in some scenarios,' which is appropriately cautious rather than definitionally forced.

Assumptions & free parameters 0 free parameters · 2 assumptions · 0 invented entities

The paper does not introduce new free parameters or invented entities. It relies on the standard assumptions of the functional renormalization group and the truncation of the action. The main uncertainty is the dependence on the truncation, which is a structural assumption of the approach.

assumptions (2)
  • domain assumption The functional renormalization group provides the correct description of the coupled gravity and Abelian gauge system in the regime of interest.
The entire analysis relies on this assumption. It enters in the setup, in the choice of the regulator, and in the gauge fixing.
  • domain assumption The truncation of the effective average action is sufficient to capture the physics.
The paper studies the origin of the fixed points. The truncation determines which operators are included. A too-severe truncation could miss or create fixed points.

Both General Relativity and the Standard Model of particle physics are not UV complete. General Relativity is perturbatively non-renormalizable, while the Standard Model features Landau poles, where couplings are predicted to diverge at finite energies, e.g., in the Abelian gauge sector. Asymptotically safe quantum gravity may resolve both of these issues at the same time. In this paper, we assess the systematic uncertainties associated with this scenario, in particular with the gravitationally induced UV-completion of the Abelian gauge sector. Specifically, we study the dependence of this qualitative feature, namely the existence of a UV-complete gauge sector, on unphysical choices like the gauge, and the regulator function. Intriguingly, in some scenarios, we find simultaneous points of minimal sensitivity relative to both the regulator and gauge parameters, which allow for a UV completion. This provides further indications that the simultaneous UV-completion of quantum gravity and matter via an asymptotically safe fixed point is a robust physical feature, and that physical quantities, like scaling exponents, can become independent of unphysical choices.
