As one of the most important elements in astronomy, iron abundance determinations need to be as accurate as possible. We investigate the accuracy of spectroscopic iron abundance analyses using archetypal metal-poor stars. We perform detailed 3D non-LTE radiative transfer calculations based on 3D hydrodynamic Stagger model atmospheres, and employ a new model atom that includes new quantum-mechanical neutral hydrogen collisional rate coefficients. With the exception of the red giant HD122563, we find that the 3D non-LTE models achieve Fe i/Fe ii excitation and ionization balance as well as not having any trends with equivalent width to within modelling uncertainties of 0.05 dex, all without having to invoke any microturbulent broadening; for HD122563 we predict that the current best parallax-based surface gravity is over-estimated by 0.5 dex. Using a 3D non-LTE analysis, we infer iron abundances from the 3D model atmospheres that are roughly 0.1 dex higher than corresponding abundances from 1D MARCS model atmospheres; these differences go in the same direction as the non-LTE effects themselves. We make available grids of departure coefficients, equivalent widths and abundance corrections, calculated on 1D MARCS model atmospheres and horizontally- and temporally-averaged 3D Stagger model atmospheres.

  1. PANTERA. I. Hunting for the Most Metal-Rich Stars in the Solar Neighborhood with High-Resolution Spectroscopy

    astro-ph.SR 2026-07 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

Gaia XP photometric metallicities overpredict iron abundance by ~0.16 dex for cool metal-rich giants, yet the sample still contains 25 ultra-metal-rich stars up to [Fe/H]=+0.58.

  2. The complex stellar system M 22: constraining the chemical enrichment from AGB stars using magnesium isotope ratios

    astro-ph.GA 2026-07 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

First Mg isotope measurements at [Fe/H]≈-2 in a globular cluster show no difference tied to s-process enrichment, favoring ~2.75 M_sun AGB polluters and a 280–480 Myr age gap.

  3. The complex stellar system M 22: confirming abundance variations with high precision differential measurements

    astro-ph.GA 2026-07 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

High-precision differential abundances confirm M 22 hosts a >0.24 dex iron spread and ~0.65 dex s-process spread, and reveal new internal abundance variations within each population.

  4. Observational Signatures and Constraints on the Intermediate Neutron-Capture Process. The Case of the CEMP star TYC 6044-714-1 (RAVE J094921.8-161722)

    astro-ph.SR 2026-05 unverdicted novelty 5.0 of 10

High-precision analysis of TYC 6044-714-1 favors s+r nucleosynthesis over i-process models, which require implausible conditions and mismatch Ba isotopes.

  5. Three Extremely Metal-Poor stars: discovery of a new CEMP-no star

    astro-ph.SR 2026-06 unverdicted novelty 4.0 of 10

Discovery and classification of HE 1153-0518 as a new high-A(C) CEMP-no star among three EMP stars based on abundance patterns from high-resolution spectra.
