We construct an off-shell N=3 supersymmetric extension of the abelian D=4 Born-Infeld action starting from the action of supersymmetric Maxwell theory in N=3 harmonic superspace. A crucial new feature of the N=3 super BI action is that its interaction part contains only terms of the order 4k in the N=3 superfield strengths. The correct component bosonic BI action arises as the result of elimination of auxiliary tensor field which is present in the off-shell N=3 vector multiplet in parallel with the gauge field strength. In this new Legendre-type representation, the bosonic BI action is fully specified by a real function of the single variable quartic in the auxiliary tensor field. The generic choice of this function amounts to a wide set of self-dual nonlinear extensions of the Maxwell action. All of them admit an off-shell N=3 supersymmetrization.

    hep-th 2026-05 unverdicted novelty 6.0 of 10

Auxiliary-field construction from Born-Infeld seed yields causal self-dual nonlinear electrodynamics that generally solve the self-duality equations.

  3. Integrable deformations of dimensionally reduced gravity

    hep-th 2025-02 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

Auxiliary field and Yang-Baxter deformations of D=2 dimensionally reduced gravity are shown to admit flat Lax representations, with the auxiliary field case preserving the Hamiltonian integrability structure.

  4. Manifestly duality-invariant interactions in diverse dimensions

    hep-th 2019-08 conditional novelty 5.0 of 10

For a gauge (2p-1)-form in d=4p dimensions, a U(1) duality-invariant theory is reformulated so that the self-interactions of an auxiliary tensor are manifestly U(1) invariant.

  5. Nonlinear self-duality for arbitrary spin, superspin, and supersymmetry type

    hep-th 2026-02 conditional novelty 4.0 of 10

Every U(1) duality-invariant (super)conformal gauge theory of arbitrary (super)spin obeys a universal self-duality equation, is Legendre self-dual, and (for spin > 1) lives only on conformally flat backgrounds.

  6. On nonlinear self-duality in $4p$ dimensions

    hep-th 2026-01 conditional novelty 4.0 of 10

Every 4D self-dual nonlinear electrodynamics model extends, via the same L(S,P) ansatz and equation, to U(1) duality-invariant (2p−1)-form theories in 4p dimensions (already in [19]); new here are a ModMax-type deform...
