We review work done over the last years on the macroscopic and microscopic entropy of supersymmetric black holes in fourdimensional N=2 supergravity and in N=2 compactifications of string theory and M-theory. Particular emphasis is put on the crucial role of higher curvature terms and of modifications of the area law in obtaining agreement between the macroscopic entropy, which is a geometric property of black hole solutions and the microscopic entropy, which is computed by state counting in Calabi-Yau compactifications of string or M-theory. We also discuss invariance properties of the entropy under stringy T-duality and S-duality transformations in N=2,4 compactifications in presence of higher curvature terms. In order to make the paper self-contained we review the laws of black hole mechanics in higher derivative gravity, the definition of entropy as a surface charge, the superconformal off-shell description of N=2 supergravity, special geometry, and N=2 compactifications of heterotic and type II string theory and of M-theory.

  1. Symmetries of non-maximal supergravities with higher-derivative corrections

    hep-th 2026-03 unverdicted novelty 7.0 of 10

Higher-derivative corrections explicitly break all hidden symmetry enhancements in the three-dimensional reductions of non-maximal supergravities.

  2. Multicentered black hole saddles for supersymmetric indices

    hep-th 2025-07 conditional novelty 7.0 of 10

Multi-center black hole saddles for the supersymmetric index exist at finite temperature, their on-shell action is the sum of extremal entropies, and the entire moduli space of saddles vanishes at walls of marginal stability.

  3. Only Flat Spacetime is Full BPS in Four Dimensional N=3 and N=4 Supergravity

    hep-th 2025-05 unverdicted novelty 6.0 of 10

Flat spacetime is the only fully supersymmetric solution in four-dimensional N=3 and N=4 higher derivative Poincaré supergravity, unlike N=2 where Bertotti-Robinson geometry also qualifies.

  4. BMPV black hole at first order in $\alpha'$

    hep-th 2026-06 unverdicted novelty 5.0 of 10

Derives analytic α' corrections to the three-charge BMPV black hole geometry and computes its corrected entropy via generalized Wald formula, matching supersymmetric index results.

  5. Attractor saddle for 5D black hole index

    hep-th 2024-11 unverdicted novelty 3.0 of 10

The non-extremal saddle for the 5D BMPV black hole index is expressed in canonical harmonic-function form on a flat base, establishing supersymmetry and the new attractor property.
