We demonstrate that AdS_5 x T^{pq} is unstable, in the sense of Breitenlohner and Freedman, for unequal p and q. This settles, negatively, the long-standing question of whether the T^{pq} manifolds for unequal p and q might correspond to non-supersymmetric fixed points of the renormalization group. We also show that the AdS_3 x S^7 vacuum of Sugimoto's USp(32) open string theory is unstable. This explains, at a heuristic level, the apparent absence of a heterotic string dual.

  1. Brane annihilation in non-supersymmetric strings

    hep-th 2019-08 conditional novelty 7.0 of 10

Non-supersymmetric AdS×S flux vacua in three string models decay by flux-reducing tunneling whose semi-classical rates match brane-instanton estimates from D1- or NS5-branes.

  2. Non-supersymmetric strings on AdS$_3$: a world-sheet perspective

    hep-th 2025-12 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

On AdS3×S3×S3×S1, a Wilson-line deformation of the Spin(16)×Spin(16)⋊Z2 heterotic string produces a level-matched tachyon, so the classical moduli space contains unstable regions.

  3. Stability of non-supersymmetric vacua from calibrations

    hep-th 2025-07 unverdicted novelty 5.0 of 10

Uses calibrations to protect examined non-supersymmetric AdS vacua in type II string theory from D-brane mediated decays, including abelian bound states.

  4. Aspects of strings without spacetime supersymmetry

    hep-th 2025-09 unverdicted novelty 2.0 of 10

A survey of tachyons and tadpoles in non-supersymmetric closed and orientifold strings, including ten-dimensional models and landscape attempts.
