abstract

We present the study of a sample of seven "bare" active galactic nuclei (AGN) observed with Suzaku. We interpret the spectrum of these sources with a relativistic reflection component and we employ our model RELXILL_NK to test the Kerr nature of their supermassive black holes. We constrain the Johannsen deformation parameters $\alpha_{13}$ and $\alpha_{22}$, in which the Kerr metric is recovered when $\alpha_{13} = \alpha_{22} = 0$. All our measurements are consistent with the hypothesis that the spacetime geometry around these supermassive objects is described by the Kerr solution. For some sources, we obtain quite strong constraints on $\alpha_{13}$ and $\alpha_{22}$ when compared to those found in our previous studies. We discuss the systematic uncertainties in our tests and the implications of our results.

  1. Testing non-circular black hole spacetime with X-ray reflection

    gr-qc 2026-02 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

X-ray reflection data for EXO 1846–031 cannot distinguish the non-circular deformation parameter ℓ_NP from zero, remaining consistent with the Kerr hypothesis.

  2. Relativistic reflection spectra of super-spinning black holes

    gr-qc 2019-08 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

Fitting Suzaku reflection spectra with a super-spinning spacetime model finds apparent deviations from Kerr in Ark 120 and Swift J0501.9, but the 3-sigma claim is not consistently supported for Swift.

  3. Testing black hole metrics with binary black hole inspirals

    gr-qc 2025-10 unverdicted novelty 3.0 of 10

Constraints on deviations from Kerr black hole metrics are derived from binary black hole inspiral waveforms modeled with effective one-body methods and analyzed via the parameterized post-Einsteinian framework.

  4. RELXILL_NK: A Black Hole Relativistic Reflection Model for Testing General Relativity

    gr-qc 2019-08 conditional novelty 3.0 of 10

RELXILL_NK, a publicly available X-ray reflection model that includes non-Kerr black hole spacetimes, is presented and three of its flavors are compared using the Johannsen metric.

  5. Testing General Relativity with Black Holes

    gr-qc 2025-08 unverdicted novelty 1.0 of 10

A status review of X-ray tests of the Kerr black hole hypothesis, concluding that current data are consistent with General Relativity, plus a speculative interstellar probe proposal.
